Monday, December 21 - We were both a little worried about safety in Phnom Penh. Both the Cambodia travelogue we watched and our guidebook indicated that pick pockets were abundant and that “motorcycle cowboys” – people who snatch purses and bags as they drive by – were everywhere. And given the sheer volume of moto-traffic on the streets, it would be pretty hard to spot a cowboy coming your way.
But the first night in town, we decided to take just the bare essentials (a few dollars in our pocket) and head out into the city. Perhaps it helped that we were staying in a fairly touristy area, but it didn’t take long to get comfortable being on the street. Yes, we remained vigilant, but neither of us ever felt like we were in any danger.
We even did some walking in less touristy areas and all went fine. Thing is, the Cambodian people are just so friendly, it’s hard to think any of them might do you harm. They’re always ready with a smile, and if you learn a word or two – something as simple as “thank you” – they will love you forever!
