Crossing the Road

Tuesday, December 22 - One other note on the sheer number of motos: They make it hard to cross the road. But you eventually start to learn that traffic moves in a very predictable way.

At any intersection (except ones with traffic lights), vehicles come up to the intersection until they reach kind of a critical mass. Then they start to move through the intersection together and traffic coming in the opposite direction takes a turn to stop. That group of traffic then builds up and the cycle continues.

So, when you want to cross the street, you wait for the critical mass to get through, then you take your turn when the traffic lulls a bit. You still have to cross through traffic – there are no crossing signals – but the motos and tuktuks all move along slowly enough and find their way around the pedestrians.

The first night in town it took us a while to cross streets, but by the end of day 2 we were expert crossers.
