One Dollar

Saturday, December 26 – Everywhere you go in Cambodia – the Angkor Temples, the Phnom Penh riverfront, a boat in the middle of Tonle Sap lake – you’re barraged by young children selling trinkets and history books. And they basically know about four words: “You buy, one dollar.”

It’s such a pitiful and sad little voice, but it’s constant as two or three surround you muttering their incessant chant: “You buy, one dollar. You buy, one dollar. You buy, one dollar. You buy, one dollar. You buy, one dollar....”

It’s hard not to give them all money, but you know darn well they don’t receive a penny of it. It all goes to some adult that’s pimping out these children for their own selfish end. Still, you have to have a strong resolve.
