Wet

Saturday, December 19 - This is a wet country. We already explained how it rains every day – especially when we’re on the highway – but there’s a lot of water indoors too. Especially around bathrooms:

  • first of all, there’s a serious lack of facilities for drying your hands. There are a few hot air dryers, but they’re inefficient, and who wants to blow scalding hot air on their hands in a tropical country? Not us!
  • You can buy toilet paper from the attendant (assuming it’s a pay toilet), but generally, instead of TP, you’re presented with a “bum gun” – a short hose for spraying your backside after you’ve taken care of business. It’s sort of an improvised bidet – and it’s really not a bad system, except that there’s nothing to dry yourself with afterwards. So you get damp drawers after pooing in public.
  • Home bathrooms are generally wet as well – because the shower isn’t in a separate stall but rather your bathroom IS your shower stall. So the floor is wet, more often than not. And that’s fine for everyday use because mostly you run around with bare feet. But on special days like today – a wedding day - when you have to dress up, it’s super easy to wind up with wet socks. Blech!

  2. They are wet but they are all very clean. These rooms tend to dry fast too.
