Sunrise over Angkor

Saturday, December 26 – No wonder we don’t see the sunrise very often. It’s damned hard getting up in the dark – let alone getting up two hours before sunrise to make it to temple.

But that’s how we started day two at Angkor: with sunrise coming up over Angkor Wat temple – us and thousands of Japanese tourists.

Evidently the best time to see the sunrise is in June/July when the sun comes up directly behind the highest temple peak. In December the sun is kind of off to the right, but it’s still breathtaking, and, while it made for a long day and two tired travellers that evening, it was an experience we’re happy not to have missed.
