Low Cost What?

Monday, December 21 - Well, it’s getting close to Christmas – must be time to travel! Today we’re headed for our first destination outside Malaysia: Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

It’s been wonderful visiting Malaysia and, because we get an insider’s views, I have a really good sense of how the average Malaysian urbanite lives. Clearly though, given that we don’t know people in our other destinations, it’s gonna be hard to get that far off the beaten track. But hopefully we’ll have some fun adventures anyway.

The adventure started this morning around 10:30am when we left our base in KL. We packed our backpacks and trucked off to the nearest metro station. After about 2 hours of metro and bus travel, we finally reached the airport. That’s right. I said 2 HOURS! Who the hell puts the airport so far outside the city?

What’s that? This isn’t the main airport? Oh. It’s the Low-Cost Carrier terminal. Oh. It’s where the cheap bastards have to go to fly throughout Asia. That’s why it’s stuck out in the middle of nowhere.

Wait a second – now that we’re sitting at the gate, we can actually see the control tower for the main KL airport. So this can’t be very far from KLIA. So now we’re back to the first question: Who the hell puts the city airport two hours outside the city?!

Gaah!
