Immersed in the Culture

Friday, December 4 - I’m kind of privileged to be able to get way off the beaten track that the average visitor gets to tread. Because Junkii is from here, we pretty much get to see how the average Chinese-Malaysian family lives. It may seem nothing to him, but it’s really fascinating to me.

Part of our reason for this trip was to help celebrate the marriage of Junkii’s sister, and while we missed the actual ceremony (they held it a day earlier than expected to avoid some impending bad weather) we’ve been taking part in several days worth of events that would qualify as “the reception”.

On Friday, Junkii’s parents hosted a huge gathering of friends and family at their home for an all-you-can-eat/drink buffet. They rented tents, hired a caterer, and sent out what must have been 1000 invitations because there was a massive turnout.

It was fascinating to be a part of it. I don’t speak the language, but everyone was very friendly and the few people that could communicate in English did talk to me for a while. But it didn’t matter. I really just had a wonderful time being part of something I’ve never seen before. Good enough for me!
