Communications Trouble – Miss two turns

Saturday, December 5 - I don’t even really want to discuss this topic – it’s so frustrating – but what the hell. We tried to set up Junkii’s iPhone with a prepaid data plan that would allow us to tether (to use the phone like a modem so we could connect our computer to the internet without having to rely on internet cafes).

The company we signed up with – Hotlink – confirmed that we would be able to do this through their system, but after several days of trying to connect and set it up we found out that the hotlink network does not in fact work with iPhones!

They said we could use our account balance to connect, but it would be much more expensive – 1 cent per KB of data transfer – which is ludicrously expensive. It makes uploading a 4MB photo cost about RM$40! Forget about video!

Basically the bastards charged us like C$20 and we got nothing from them. A$$holes. So Now we’re relegated to using free WIFI at the nearby coffee shop – but that’s not so bad. Junkii loves the local coffee, and I’ve found the iced milk tea to be even better than the hot!

  2. The coffees make the best out of things! They are so good, and I'm really worried that I'm giong to put on some weights from the coffee itself!

  3. Meh, you've lost weight before, you can lose it again when you get back.

I'm worried about how to manage my iPhone when I'm in Australia...

  4. You should be meeting up with people and they might be able to help you figure it out. Junkii has really not used the iPhone much this trip. We have the palm that we're using for phone/sms purposes. And that works fine.

  5. It depends whether you are going to unlock your iPhone. Rogers/Fido has traveling and roaming packages that allow you to use your phone overseas, albeit much more expensive than a local SIM card would. However, we haven't been very lucky with it here in Malaysia because the cellphone carrier has just rolled out iPhone and many of the bugs and plans are not ironed out yet. The most I miss is Google map.

  6. What's the process for unlocking the iPhone? It sounds scary. LOL What I plan to do is bring an unlocked ancient phone and just plop an Optus SIM card in it and just use that for phone calls. I'll still bring my iPhone but I will set it up so it can't access data.
