Coming Out Party

Saturday, December 5 - On Saturday, the bride and groom had a formal reception at a restaurant with 40 tables (12 per table) of friends and family. This was the event that required us to bring formal wear. And good thing we did. The bride was lovely in her evening gowns, and the groom was very handsomely dressed. But the event held special significance for us. It started to feel a bit like a coming out party.

Junkii’s parents have been very kind to me. And they seem to be very comfortable having me around – which is nice – but it must be strange for them to have to explain who this white guy is and why he’s at this traditional Chinese ceremony. To their credit, they not only don’t make a big deal of it, they invite me to take part!

At the photo shoot that preceded the event, I was invited to be in a few of the family photos – something I wasn’t expecting at all. Then at the reception, once the guests were seated, I was part of the head table, accompanying the family (side-by-side with Junkii) as they worked their way, processional-style behind the bride, through the crowd to take their seats I even got invited to join the family as they went table to table offering toasts to the newly-married couple.

I’m definitely feeling part of the family and we’re both beginning to think that when Junkii eventually does come out, it won’t be as big a deal as he thought it might be.

  1. That's great to hear. Again, awesome shots!!! You'll have to explain/show me how you did the black and white/colour image. Very cool effect :)

  2. Thanks. The photo was done in the editing phase, I felt it needed something extra. It's in Picasa, will definitely show you when we're back.

  3. Umm, if they're inviting you to join in the family pictures, etc., I think they already know... they'll ask what took you guys so long to tell them!

  4. Yeah, that's what we're thinking too - but still, coming out is always a nerve-racking experience
