Jumping on the Boat

Saturday, December 26 – Later in the afternoon, the tour guide recommended that we drive south of the city to see a floating village that exists on the giant Tonle Sap lake. The village of fisherfolk includes floating stores, restaurants, a school, and even a basketball court (surrounded by a cage, obviously).

He suggested it would be nice to see how these Cambodian people live their daily lives. He wasn’t wrong.

We had just spent two days scouting around piles of stone and tree – and while the spaces there are gorgeous, they’re no longer alive. There are other tourists there, but there’s no life – or human life at any rate – and we didn’t realize it during the visit, but that turned out to be kind of draining.

So once we made it out to the floating village, we were both captivated by the smiling faces we saw on ordinary people going about their daily lives. Even the kids that crawled onto our boat to sell us cans of pop for... you guessed it...one dollar.
